About CGAS

Canberra Greyhound Adoption Service is a small group of greyhound owners in the ACT region that works to promote the greyhound breed as a pet and to promote greyhound adoption. When possible, some CGAS members also foster surrendered greyhounds and find them permanent loving homes.

Unfortunately, greyhound adoption rates in Australia are quite low – many people have never met a greyhound and don’t realise that they make wonderful, loving pets. We hope to introduce many more people to these lovely dogs and to provide information on how to adopt a greyhound.

Greyhounds are often in need of homesafe they may have never made it to the track - pups from accidental litters or dogs that are either too slow or not interested in chasing - or they may have raced and are now retired (this could be from 2 years old through to seniors).

When possible, CGAS takes greyhounds into foster care. Greyhounds that come into foster care undergo an initial assessment placement before being placed in a foster home. We currently have no assessment places available and very few foster homes - this means that we may be unable to take in any new dogs for some time.

Due to these circumstances, CGAS has made the decision to focus more of our efforts on promoting the breed and greyhound adoption. We already assist local families to adopt a greyhound from Greyhound Adoption Programs and other rescue groups, by offering to act as a local contact for discussions, home visits etc., and in this way can continue to help in placing greyhounds with local families.

If you can't see your new best friend on this site, please feel free to contact us to register your interest or to just talk greyhounds!
