RIP Harvey 23.04.2008

Harvey harvey

Harvey was a handsome greyhound. He loved people and was confident and calm with children. Harvey was great with other dogs, he got on with everyone. He was affectionate, gentle and attended many events around Canberra, enjoying the attention and cuddles. Harvey loved to swim at the lake, enjoyed trips to the dog club and his walks. He loved pigs ears and liver, cuddles and the couch, and was waiting patiently for his forever home. He was 5 years old.

Unfortunately, Harvey and his carer were going for a walk on the evening of 23 April 2008, when fireworks displays began on Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain and Red Hill to welcome the Olympic torch to Canberra. Harvey panicked and despite his carer desperately trying to hold onto him, he broke free and ran in front of a car. Killed instantly.

Had his carer known that a fireworks display was being held, Harvey would have been home, safe, and not on the street.

Fireworks result in many family pets being lost, injured or killed. The Canberra pound and RSPCA shelter have to deal with a flood of lost and injured animals following a fireworks display. Other pets are never found, or are killed on the streets.

Canberra Greyhound Adoption Service is calling for appropriate and widespread advertising for government organised fireworks displays, to give owners the ability to keep their pets safe. We are also calling for the banning of backyard/'private use' fireworks.

Rest in Peace Harvey. You didn't get a chance to be adopted into a family of your own, but we all loved you. Run free at the bridge.
